Yammer : 5 reasons to explore a new space

Continuing on the Microsoft Expert Educator suggestion to make 5-tips-articles here's one on Yammer.

Yammer is part of Office365 and is free to schools, faculty and students as part of their free Office365 subscriptions.  On first glance, and in general discussion with faculty and students, its best approximation is a social networking conversation space like Facebook.

So why not just use Facebook?  For Facebook there is the explicit danger of using a personal space for professional work between & amongst students and teachers, Instead, Yammer is built in to the Office365 structure (so security and consistency of passwords).… Visit the author's original post

Lidija Kraj: Yammer in Education Part 4- Settling Down

by Lidija Kraj
Expert Educator Columnist, Croatia

Here we are, four weeks passed by and we learnt a lot. Yammer is no longer novelty for students and me, it is something we rely on and something we expect to have handy quite often. You’d be surprised how fast we get addicted to Yammer :)

We continued working on our citizenship topics, sharing, commenting and publishing presentations about future schools in Yammer. Now we have nice collection of dozen school presentations on one place, all neatly marked with hashtag #skole (that means schools in Croatian).… Visit the author's original post

Students being creative with Yammer (Guest Blog Post)

Guest blog post from Kevin Sait, Wymondham High School.

I am a firm believer, if you give a student the right tools, their  creative side will show through.   Recently we have seen this through our schools social network – Yammer in the recent months, proving the value of communication in the school.   Yammer itself was probably a bit of a gamble in the school market, my previous school did not see the value in it, however at Wymondham they took the risk.… Visit the author's original post

Lidija Kralj: Yammer in Education, Part 2

by Lidija Kralj

Second week of using Yammer in school went surprisingly well. We had chance to see why is great to be connected through social network and how urgent information could be easily shared when you have your own online group.

Geer up with GeoGebra

As mentioned in previous post our first task was about kaleidoscope. Students weren’t able to find any real kaleidoscope at home but their parents and grandparents mentioned that toy was usual on village or church fairs when they were young.… Visit the author's original post

Kalpana Kishorekumar: Yammer- APPY Communication Approach for Organizations!

by Kalpana Kishorekumar
Expert Educator Columnist, Brunei

Let this article roll out in high fashion, as I expound my walk with Yammer- an appy communication approach for organizations!

Day in and out, I have seen teachers in my school using Facebook when they are free. Who am I to complain? I use Facebook too, but what bothered me was: Why teachers use Facebook to send official messages? Why don’t they use their organizational email or just email? Is it the RIGHT communication channel for educational institutions?… Visit the author's original post

I felt this tingle while shoveling snow…

So we had a snow day Monday.  I won't go in to the gloriousness that a snow day is here in Canada.  Suffice it to say that they're as close to heaven as you can get without dying.
It came at a cost; there was 35cm of snow across my neighbourhood.  My neighbours are not teachers, they tend to be young families or retired folks -- so when I get a snow day, I grab my shovel and start clearing the snow from their driveways and steps.… Visit the author's original post

My BETT Show Presentation – ‘Bringing Learning to Life at Wymondham High Academy’

By JASON BROWN, Thursday 29th January, 22:24 PM

On Saturday 24th January I was fortunate enough to present with Kevin Sait at the BETT show at the ExCel Arena in London. For those of you who don’t know what the BETT show, it is quite simply the largest technology show in the UK with many large corporations such as Microsoft, Google, Samsung, Dell, HP and Acer each with stands and presentations. The show is held each January and is approximately a mile from end of the exhibition hall to the other – quite an event!… Visit the author's original post

Lidija Kralj: Yammer in Education, Part 1

by Lidija Kralj
Expert Educator Columnist, Croatia

Social networks are important part of our lives and lives of our students. Last few years we witnessed that social networks have no intentions to disappear and that we can’t banned them from schools effectively. So let’s embrace them and convert them into powerful tool for learning and teaching.

Safety first

Social networks are risky because lots of students share too much data about themselves, their friend and family and without thinking post naughty messages or even spread hate speech.… Visit the author's original post

Visit the author's original post

Yammer in Education- Sharing those `aha’ Moments

Social media has become such a large part of how we communicate and connect with people world wide. Just as we use social media platforms to engage and share with people in personal life, how often do we use effective online communication in our schools? Sure, we rely heavily on email as our main form of communication (something I call email fatigue), but often those `aha’ moments are never shared. Yammer in education is proving to be an effective platform for facilitating communication and collaboration among educators.… Visit the author's original post
