Why Australia’s private schools need automation

Australia’s independent schools face more competition than ever before. Enrolment numbers can’t keep up with demand from parents, and expectations of high academic and co-curricular results put the pressure squarely on teachers like never before. Private school boards are doing their best to optimise operations and attract top teachers – but is there more to...… Visit the author's original post

Forging stronger ties with students: TAFE Queensland South West revamps its CRM system

The success of an educational institution today is measured not only by the quality of its courses. League tables that account for ‘overall student experience’ often factor student support and engagement into their rankings. In fact, a 2016 Student Experience Survey funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training reveals that only 61%...… Visit the author's original post

How to install Microsoft Classroom in Office 365 Education

image

Microsoft Classroom is a free service for managing all classes and assignment workflows for teachers and students, which is available in Office 365 Education. In addition to the web service built into Office 365 Education, there are also iOs and Android apps for your students to get easy access from any of their devices.

imageLumagate, one of our Microsoft Education Partners in Norway has written a brilliant guide to deploying Microsoft Classroom (in both English and Norwegian). I know that many Australian customers will find this guide handy, as it steps through every single part of the process to install Microsoft Classroom into your Office 365 Education tenant.… Visit the author's original post

Creating effective learning videos – lessons I’ve learnt

imageI’ve just recently finished delivering an online course for my colleagues, where I used Office Mix to create resources (Office Mix is an add-in to PowerPoint, and a set of smart web services that make it easy to create an online learning resource, mixing PowerPoint, video, audio, assessment questions and other interactive resources). And I found that creating effective learning videos is much more than just pointing a camera at me and a screen, and starting to talk. I’ve never been a teacher, however I’m often asked to talk in lecture-style settings, and I’ve learnt that doing an effective in-person presentation to a room of 100 people is a very different challenge from making online learning more effective.… Visit the author's original post

Deploy a Moodle Cluster on Azure, using Ubuntu

Moodle logoI’ve just finished a conversation with our team in the US who are working on lots of smart Moodle integrations to various Microsoft technologies (like the Office 365 integration with Moodle components and the Moodle virtual images for Azure) and they mentioned that there are now also complete quick start templates for deploying a scalable Moodle cluster, on a LAMP stack, on Microsoft Azure. It’s a quick way to get Moodle in the cloud.

Why is cloud-hosted Moodle important?

Often, many Moodle installations start off at small scale as an open source project, and then grow to become a critical tool in a school or universities’ system.… Visit the author's original post

Hosting Moodle in Azure – TAFE South Australia moves online

I’ve written before about the work that our technical teams have done to make it simpler to run Moodle on Azure, and the way that you can integrate Office 365 with Moodle to make life easier for teaching staff and students (as well as easing the manage of a potentially-complex IT system).

imageThis week, TAFE South Australia have announced they have moved their Moodle LMS to Microsoft Azure in the cloud, in order to improve the level of service delivered to their students.… Visit the author's original post

Introducing: Microsoft Office 365 for Moodlerooms

Moodlerooms, from Blackboard, is now integrated to Office 365, so that studentsstaff can use Office 365 identity for a smooth single sign on experience, sync info to their Outlook calendars, store files on OneDrive for Business, and submit assignments and feedback through OneNote.

Last week at EDUCAUSE, Blackboard announced the integration of the Microsoft Office 365 plugins with Moodlerooms.

Australian Education Case Studies Update – November 2015

Education Case Studies iconOne question that I’m asked frequently about new projects is:

Who else is doing this?

In some cases, what people (partners/customers) are looking for is confirmation that they’re going to be at the innovative edge - and that what they are doing hasn’t been done before. But most of the time, they are looking for reassurance that somebody else has taken the journey before them!

So I collate a list of public education case studies and examples from within Australia, which will help answer the question.… Visit the author's original post

edX and Microsoft Office integration – Office Mix and Office 365

Last year I wrote about the Microsoft partnership with edX to develop services to help teachers, including integration between edX and Office Mix - to allow teachers to quickly and easily create multimedia content using PowerPoint. Open edX is an open source platform teaching and learning, and is used by many universities to publish MOOCs, as well as being used by education and professional learning organisations (including Microsoft) to deliver courses online to the public. The latest Microsoft-edX integrations have been released into the latest release of Open edX.… Visit the author's original post

Is technology driving innovation at your school? Why?

desks1

For too long now, teachers have sat in a hyper-confused state allowing the technology add-on pervade every sense of excitement potential in classrooms today. We have sat and witnessed teachers drowning in the confusion of modern-day technology tools. In the rush to be seen to being innovative, they place the worksheets, assignments, powerpoints and dare I say it, YouTubes onto their school’s Learning Management Systems. For far too long now, we have seen the misuse of technology invade the classroom learning experience.… Visit the author's original post

Software Usability in Education

As many of you know, I have been working on my PhD in Individualising instruction for all learners.  As part of this, I had to complete some qualitative data (Interview) analysis.  I initially did all of this in Microsoft Word.  All was fine, but I was struggling when it came to identifying themes. Upon concluding a Bing search, I learned that the recommended software for such a task is NVivo.  I downloaded NVivo 10 and completed the relevant updates.  It is an amazing piece of Software, but it has taken me about 3 hours to master.  … Visit the author's original post

Moodle integration with Office 365–how to get it

Last month, when I wrote that new Moodle integrations with Microsoft technology were on the way, I didn’t have an exact date, but forecast ‘late January’. And how time flies – because they’ve just arrived!

Microsoft Open Technologies logoOvernight, the work from our Microsoft Open Technologies team and the Remote Learner team (a Moodle partner), was released as open source Moodle plugins - enabling close integration between Moodle and Office 365. This is key news for education institutions, because there’s a huge overlap between the 50,000+ Moodle installations and the millions of Office 365 Education users.… Visit the author's original post

New Moodle integrations with Microsoft technology are on the way

Over the last couple of years I’ve written a number of times about integration points between Moodle and Microsoft, to help education customers understand what the opportunities are to be able to integrate two of their key tools for students and staff. This turns out to be important even for universities or TAFEs which have standardised on other learning management systems, because even in these organisations, there seem to always be specific departments, projects or users who are running a Moodle learning management system – even when everybody else is using the institution’s standard Blackboard/Brightspace or other LMS.… Visit the author's original post

New Moodle Mobile app released for Windows 8 and Windows Phone

Moodle logoMoodle for Windows 8 and Windows Phone has been available as an app since August this year – through the “Moodle Mobile” app. Just last week, the latest version was released – Moodle Mobile 1.9 – which has a updated look and feel and is designed to be more user friendly. It allows your students to access your Moodle LMS when they’re mobile and they don’t need to be in front of their PC to access your courses and lesson materials.… Visit the author's original post

edX and Microsoft partnership for teachers

imageedX is an online learning environment which is extensively used for MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), founded as a non-profit partnership between Harvard and MIT. They’ve just announced a partnership with Microsoft to help online course creators to develop content with Office Mix.

Many faculty currently use PowerPoint slides as the basis of their lectures on edX. But creating videos, updating and revising them, and adding interactive elements to lectures can be time-consuming. With Office Mix, educators can easily produce videos and online lectures that deliver an engaging experience to students, with support for audio and video recordings, screen captures, hyperlinks, and digital ink.… Visit the author's original post

Update on running Moodle in the cloud on Microsoft Azure

There’s been quite a bit of news around integration work for Moodle on the Microsoft Azure cloud recently, so I have gathered together some update info. This post is about running Moodle in the cloud. Next week, I’ll pull some bits together on integration with other Microsoft technologies.

Fully supported Moodle cloud service for Microsoft Azure cloud

Two of the largest official Moodle partners (Remote-Learner and NivelSiete) have teamed together to provide fully supported and maintained Microsoft Azure Certified Moodle installations in the Azure Cloud.… Visit the author's original post

Integrating Microsoft Office 365 Education with Desire2Learn Learning Environment

One of the futures of Learning Management Systems is as a key bridge, building integration between different systems within an education institution. In the future, it’s unlikely that we’re going to see a single monolithic system that solves every elearning challenge, but instead a set of best-of-class components effectively interconnected.

imageOne example is the integration between a Learning Management System (LMS) and the communication and productivity services that an institution uses - in this case, between the Brightspace* D2L Learning Environment and Office 365.… Visit the author's original post
