@JuliaJanosikova

Bringing real-world activities into the classroom engages students and gives educators new ways to connect with them. This philosophy not only directs MIE Expert Julia Janosikova’s teaching approach, it helped her discover her calling.

“When I was a teenager, I volunteered in the Slovak (Boy) Scout organization, and there I worked with young children,” Janosikova explains. “This affected my career choice and made me see teaching more as a mission and hobby than as a job.”

That experience also shaped the way she shares new activities with her students.… Visit the author's original post

“My life has been that of a seeker. All my life is learning — both formally and informally.” – Floyd Chanda, Zambia

A willingness to try new things can be just as important for educators as it is for their students. Just ask Floyd Chanda..

“The biggest challenge for education today is to keep up with the pace of the changing technologies — especially in the Third World,” Chanda shares with us. “I am responding to this by encouraging my fellow educators to remain open to learning and change in the 21st century.”

Chanda loves to share the skills and knowledge he’s acquired as a Microsoft Innovator Educator Expert (MIEE) with his fellow teachers.… Visit the author's original post

Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) Expert Blair Smith says that traveling with his parents as a child opened his eyes to the opportunities available to those with the desire to pursue their dreams. But at the small rural school where he teaches, he found that most students had never even left Central Queensland, let alone the country.

Then Skype changed everything.

It all started when Galán decided to take the lead in modernizing the pedagogical approach at his school. Through this process, his school became a Microsoft Showcase School, and Galán himself became a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert (MIEE) and an MIE Master Trainer.… Visit the author's original post

“Engaging students, whether K-12 or adult learners, in real life, inquiry-based problems empowers them to become the protagonists in their story.” – Miguel Guhlin, USA

Miguel Guhlin
Director of Professional Development
TCEA.org
Austin, Texas, USA
@mguhlin

Working with bilingual/English as a Second Language (ESL) students in the small Texas town where President Lyndon Baines Johnson once taught transformed Miguel Guhlin’s views on education. But it was when Guhlin started sharing his teaching experiences with others that he truly found his calling.

“When I moved to East Texas, I began to write about what my students and I were doing, then share it online via the Texas Education Network (TENET),” Guhlin explains.… Visit the author's original post

Visit the author's original post

Visit the author's original post

No classrooms. No teachers. No blackboards. No exams.

To celebrate five years of Daily Edventures, we’re sharing some of our favorite posts. This Daily Edventure was originally published on January 10, 2012.

At first glance it’s pretty obvious: Colegio Fontán is different. No classrooms.
No teachers. No blackboards. No exams. Technology supports everything they do.

“Everyone knows the ‘what’ to do in education. We’ve built the ‘how’ instead,” says Julio Fontán, school President.

Disruptive Technologies – What’s Now and Next for Education at EduTech Australia 2017

Just a few minutes ago, I finished speaking at the EduTech Conference in Sydney about the impact of disruptive technologies on education. Months ago, I’d agreed to talk in a phone call with a colleague, and because I was overseas travelling at the time, they had provided the conference organisers with a synopsis that was fairly brief and seemed to cover every emerging technology you could imagine:

Disruptive Technologies – What’s Now and Next for Education at EduTech Australia 2017

“With the advent of powerful cloud computing and changing environments, how will emerging and future technologies impact on school based IT, teaching, learning and even buildings and learning spaces?

How Pilbara Group is helping Australian universities turn knowledge into insight

Guest blog post from Lea Patterson, President & CEO, Pilbara

Students in 2017 - 2 of these are likely to leave by 2018

In any society, the availability of high-quality, affordable education not only determines the prosperity of that country’s knowledge economy, but also its future viability as a key player in our digital world.

This is one of the key reasons why I’ve always been of the belief that everyone, regardless of geography, social or economic status, is entitled to a good education.

Bringing this vision to life is what drives the work we do at Pilbara – an Australian-based global consultancy and software company working with universities and colleges to ensure their courses and programs are sustainable and accessible to all.… Visit the author's original post

Students in 2017 - 2 of these are likely to leave by 2018

Did you know the current university attrition rate sees one-in-five students leave their course in the first year – resulting in $3.5 billion of lost student lifetime value across the student lifecycle? And that one-in-three university students fail to complete the course they enrolled in within six years of beginning it?

Both trends are impacting Australia’s current higher education sector, and have the potential to adversely impact our country’s future economic prosperity considering fewer skilled graduates are entering the workforce.… Visit the author's original post
