NYC DOE Supports Innovative Teaching

Recently, I delivered several Redefining Learning PD sessions for NYC DOE educators. Teachers were thrilled to discover Microsoft’s OneNote and Class Notebook. Part of Office 365, Microsoft has made technology free, accessible and is helping to equalize the playing field in education. Teachers no longer need to stress over xerox copies and handouts being completed in time. Paperwork does not need to be carried home for scoring as all notebooks are stored in the cloud.  Digital notebooks are created and quickly duplicated for different subjects or classes.… Visit the author's original post

Passive users or critical thinkers? Developing critical and creative thinking skills with technology

Passive users or critical thinkers?

Developing critical and creative thinking skills with technology

Had enough with your students using their tablets or mobile devices to play games for non-thinking users? Project based learning with the aid of technology can be used creatively to stimulate students interest and develop their critical and creative thinking skills. This post is about activities and tools that can help students use their creative and critical abilities while learning.

A brief intro
Technology has often been accused of creating passive learners, who rely heavily on visuals and are used to a superficial approach to learning, rather than developing their creative and critical thinking skills.Visit the author's original post

Pro Plus

innedBeing a Microsoft Innovative Educator and more recently asked to be a ‘Fellow’ I have gained many insightful views to the direction that Microsoft have been taking in regards to education and their role in it.

What I have been most impressed about is the ‘light-touch’ of this vision in the way that It has been gradually unveiled to us within the Innovative Educator programme and through the Educator Network. The focus has always been based around seeing and celebrating the good practice that goes on in classrooms, worldwide, and how much they can learn from us as well as giving us the tools to help improve our practice.… Visit the author's original post

Visit the author's original post

Under the Sway of literature

Under the Sway of literature

Sharing creativity with 3rdgraders
"I soon found myself surrounded by a swarm of kids buzzing happily and eagerly awaiting to read their stories to their peers."
Can literature, children’s creativity and technology mix together in a fine blend? Since
technology became an integral part of our daily teaching practice, I’ve often seen parents expressing concern that their kids will put aside reading books for the sake of their tablets. Yet, these two can complement each other.Visit the author's original post

Project „Byblos“ and Its’ Apps

Do you think it’s easy  to be a good  librarian in elementary school?

20141124_115909 20141014_125214 20141014_125220

A short test for you, especially  for the language teachers.  What would you do in the following situation:

Library. Buzzing like in the beehive. Students work assignments, talk, looking at the books. A 5th grade student come and ask:
– Give me the book „Adventures of Robinson Crusoe“, please.
– Here you are, dear.
– Wow, it is so big – she said.
– And just as boring – adds a student who works homework in the library.… Visit the author's original post

Street Dreams

So honored and excited to have just had an article, Street Dreams, published in  School Library Journal, the national magazine launched in 1954, and  the leading publication for librarians who work with children. SLJ has  a print circulation of over 30,000, and a web site audience of over 220,000 visitors per month.

Take a few minutes to read the article (linked below) about the  school library and how the scholars are learning environmentalism and developing citizenship skills at the same time.… Visit the author's original post

Ovi Barcelo: 10 Things We Need to Know About Apps in the Classroom

by Ovi Barcelo Expert Educator Columnist, Spain Nowadays it is very difficult to look to the past for longer than 4 or 5 years. We think that Whatsapp, for example, has been around forever when in fact the app is only 5 years old. The same goes for Angry Birds (launched 2009) and Twitter (which was also translated to other languages starting 2009). So, what will be our apps landscape be like five years from now? Can we trust our methodology only in apps?… Visit the author's original post

A Visit to the Night Zoo

Our 3rd grade students went on a virtual field trip to the Night Zoo this morning.  The Night Zoo has amazing creatures like Giraffe Spies, Time-Traveling Elephants, and Orange Horses that have traffic cones and umbrellas.  Students wanted to know where this Night Zoo was located, but Paul, one of the night zookeepers, told us that the location had to remain secret to protect the animals.  You can visit the Night Zoo by going to its website:  www.nightzookeeper.com.  Below are some pictures and a video from our call.… Visit the author's original post

Literature activities for a digital generation

Literature activities for a digital generation

Thought that literature is a relic of the past? Too early to hold a memorial service! Literature strikes back with the aid of technology.

The following 4 activities are based on the 2013 IATEFL Learning Technology SIG scholarship winning presentation with Chryssanthe Sotiriou. The 5th activity requires no technology at all but it is fun and young learners love it.

I think I can read your mind and see two huge "Why?"  on your faces....
